The 3-second rule that decides every video's fate

You can spend two weeks on a video and lose the viewer in the first second. On paid social, the opening three seconds don't support the ad — they are the ad. Everything after is only for the people you've already earned.
Why three seconds is the whole game
The feed is a scroll, not a screening. Platforms optimize for the swipe, so your hook competes with every other thing fighting for that thumb. If you don't interrupt the scroll fast, the algorithm quietly stops showing the ad — and your best storytelling never gets seen.
What actually stops the scroll
A visual pattern-break in the very first frame.
A claim or question that hits a real tension, fast.
Motion, faces, or on-screen text that promise a payoff.
A native feel — it should look like content, not "an ad."
How to test hooks, not videos
Cut the same video with four or five different openings and keep the body identical. Let spend decide which hook earns the rest of the runtime. Most "bad" videos are good videos with the wrong first second.
The takeaway
Stop polishing the middle. Win the first three seconds, and everything else you made finally gets a chance to work.
