Most marketing dashboards are a wall of numbers nobody acts on. More metrics feel rigorous; they usually just hide the two or three that matter. A good dashboard makes decisions faster, not longer.

Why more metrics make you slower

Every extra number is another thing to interpret, argue about, and rationalize — noise dressed as insight. If a metric has never once changed a decision, it doesn't belong on the board.

The five that earn their place

  • Revenue (or revenue influenced) — the only real scoreboard.

  • CAC — what a customer actually costs to acquire.

  • ROAS / blended MER — is the spend paying for itself?

  • Retention / repeat rate — are they coming back?

  • Contribution margin or payback — does the growth actually make money?

How to read them together

No single number tells the truth; the story is in the relationships between them. Watch them weekly, not daily — daily noise makes you overreact to nothing.

The takeaway

If your dashboard can't fit on one screen and drive one decision, it's too big. Cut until it does.
